The layer of gases that surround the Earth

Real World Example

Imagine trying to keep a group of balloons in place on a windy day. Just as those balloons form a protective cluster around you, shielding you from the wind, the atmosphere is a protective layer of gases surrounding the Earth. Just like the balloons, which need to be tethered to stay in place, the atmosphere is held by Earth's gravity, keeping it from drifting into space.
