How hot or cold something is, it is determined by the kinetic energy of its particles

Real World Example

Imagine trying to gauge how busy a street is by observing the speed and number of cars passing by. Just like a busy street is determined by the speed and frequency of the cars, temperature is determined by the speed and energy of the particles in a substance. In this analogy, cars represent particles, their speed represents kinetic energy, and the bustling activity of the street mirrors the heat of a substance – the faster and more numerous the cars, the busier (or hotter) the street (or substance) becomes.
