Real World Example

Imagine a busy street that alternates between heavy traffic during rush hours and tranquility during off-peak times. This ebb and flow of cars is similar to the mid-intertidal zone on a coast, which is regularly covered and uncovered by the tides. Just as the street experiences periods of congestion and calm, the mid-intertidal zone is alternately submerged under water during high tide and exposed to the air during low tide, with organisms adapted to thrive in these changing conditions much like people adapt to the differing traffic patterns.
