Electrolytic Cell

An electrochemical device in which electrolysis takes place when an electric current is used

Real World Example

Imagine you're trying to get ketchup out of a stubborn glass bottle by tapping it repeatedly. Just as you apply external force to start the flow of ketchup, an electrolytic cell uses an external electric current to drive a chemical reaction that wouldn't occur spontaneously. In this analogy, the glass bottle is like the electrolytic cell, the ketchup represents the ions needing to move, and your tapping is analogous to the electric current that initiates the reaction.
