Imagine trying to figure out how spicy a dish is before taking a bite. Just as the level of spiciness in food can range from mild to fiery based on the amount of hot pepper used, the acidity or basicity of a solution can range from acidic to basic depending on the concentration of hydrogen ions. The connection here is that both scenarios involve a scale that measures intensity: the spice level measures the intensity of heat, while the pH scale measures the intensity of acidity or basicity based on hydrogen ion concentration.
