Real World Example

Imagine trying to carry too many grocery bags into the house without dropping anything. This situation is similar to an anion, which is an ion that has taken on extra electrons and thus has a negative charge. Just as you end up with more bags than you can comfortably handle, an atom becomes an anion when it gains more electrons than protons, resulting in a negative charge.
