Elements in Group 1 of the periodic table, like lithium, sodium and potassium

Real World Example

Imagine trying to keep a group of overly enthusiastic dogs on leashes during a walk; they're always ready to dash off at the slightest opportunity. Alkali metals, like lithium, sodium, and potassium, behave similarly because they are highly reactive and eager to engage in chemical reactions. Just as these dogs are hard to control due to their energy and excitement, alkali metals have a single electron in their outer shell that they readily lose, making them very reactive and hard to keep in their elemental state.
