This is similar to how relief in geography describes the difference in elevation between the high and low parts of an area. Just as you notice the varying heights of books, relief highlights the varying elevations like hills and valleys in a landscape, where the tallest book represents the highest elevation and the shortest book represents the lowest elevation.
