This is similar to how geologists break down Earth's history into epochs, which are like dividing your day into distinct parts such as morning, afternoon, and evening. Just as you might say your morning is longer than breakfast but shorter than the entire morning routine, an epoch is a unit of geologic time that is longer than an age (like breakfast) but shorter than a period (like the entire morning).
