A device that burns fuel, and expels gas in one direction to move in the opposite direction

Real World Example

Imagine you're trying to push a heavy shopping cart that just won't budge until you lean against it with all your might. Much like how you push backward to get the cart moving forward, a rocket works by expelling gas in one direction to propel itself in the opposite direction. Just as your backward force on the cart results in it moving forward, a rocket burns fuel to forcefully expel gas backward, which then pushes it forward through space.
