Trade Union

An organization of workers who unite to negotiate wages, working conditions, etc.

Real World Example

Between 1790 and 1860, especially in the Northern United States, trade unions formed as workers banded together to demand better wages and safer working conditions during the Industrial Revolution. Factories were growing rapidly, but many workers faced long hours, low pay, and dangerous environments. Unions gave workers a collective voice to negotiate with employers and push for fair treatment and labor laws. Today, trade unions still play a crucial role in protecting workers' rights and helping to ensure fair compensation and safe workplaces. For example, if a grocery store employee is part of a union, they might have better health benefits and job security than if they were negotiating alone.
