Upwelling

The vertical movement of cold water from the deep ocean to the surface

Real World Example

Imagine you're trying to reach a jar on the top shelf of your kitchen cabinet, but it's just out of reach. This is similar to when cold, nutrient-rich water from the ocean's depths is "reached for" by the surface waters due to the winds blowing across the ocean and moving the surface water away, making room for deeper water to rise. Just like using a stool to bring the jar within grasp, upwelling brings the deep ocean's nutrients to the surface, where they become accessible to surface-dwelling marine life, enriching the ecosystem above.
