A simple machine made of an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder

Real World Example

Imagine trying to push a heavy box up a steep hill; it feels almost impossible because of the direct, steep climb. Similarly, a screw makes use of a gentler approach by having an inclined plane, like a gradual slope, wrapped around a cylinder. Just as pushing the box up a winding path makes it easier to reach the top, the inclined plane of a screw reduces the effort needed to drive it into materials by spreading the force over a longer distance.
