Vestigial Structure
Loading image...
A structure that was useful to an ancestor but is no longer functional, like the appendix
Real World Example
Imagine having an old, bulky key on your keychain that used to open the door to your first apartment but now doesn't fit any lock you currently use. This unused key is like a vestigial structure; it once served a vital purpose but no longer has a function in your present life. Just as the key remains on the keychain out of habit or nostalgia, vestigial structures, like the appendix, linger in our bodies, remnants of a past where they played an essential role for our ancestors but now serve little to no purpose.
