Ultimatum

Ultimatum Definition | Radience Gaming

A demand whose fulfillment is backed up by a threat

Real World Example

An ultimatum played a significant role in history during World War I when Austria-Hungary issued one to Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This ultimatum demanded harsh conditions and contributed to the outbreak of the war when Serbia couldn't fully comply. During the Russian Revolution, ultimatums were used by revolutionary leaders to demand changes from the existing government, leading to shifts in power and society. Today, ultimatums are still relevant in personal relationships and negotiations, as they can force decisions and actions under pressure. For example, if a friend demands that you choose between them and another friend, they're issuing an ultimatum, which can create tension and force you to make difficult choices.
