Expansionism

An expansion of territory, power, wealth or influence

Real World Example

During the period of 1815-1915, many Western democracies engaged in expansionism by acquiring new territories and increasing their influence globally. This was important because it allowed these nations to access new resources, markets, and strategic military locations, fueling economic growth and national prestige. Expansionism responded to the need for resources to support growing populations and industries, as well as nationalistic desires for increased power. Today, expansionism matters as countries and corporations still seek to expand their influence and resources, affecting global politics and economies. For example, when tech companies expand by acquiring smaller startups, it can lead to more innovation and job opportunities, but also concerns about monopolies and reduced competition impacting consumers.
