Appeasement

Making political concessions to an aggressive power in order to avoid conflict

Real World Example

Appeasement in history, especially before World War II, refers to the policy of European countries like Britain and France making concessions to Nazi Germany, hoping to avoid conflict by satisfying Hitler's demands. This approach was important because many countries were still recovering from World War I and wanted to prevent another devastating war. However, appeasement ultimately failed as it emboldened Hitler to continue his aggressive expansion, leading to World War II. Today, appeasement can still matter in everyday life when dealing with bullies or aggressive behavior, as giving in might encourage further negative actions. For example, if someone repeatedly cuts in line and others let it slide to avoid confrontation, it may lead to more disruptions and unfairness over time, impacting everyone involved.
