Denaturation

The breaking down of a protein's three-dimensional structure by heating, shaking, acid or alkali

Real World Example

Imagine you're building a complex house of cards, carefully balancing each card to create a stable structure. When someone bumps the table or a breeze blows, the house can collapse, leaving you with a disorganized pile of cards. This is similar to protein denaturation, where external factors like heat, shaking, or changes in pH disrupt the delicate balance of forces holding a protein's three-dimensional structure together. Just as the house of cards loses its form and function when disturbed, a protein loses its specific structure and, consequently, its ability to function properly when denatured.
