Real World Example

Imagine trying to get a specific item from a vending machine that has separate columns for drinks and snacks. This is similar to how a sex-linked gene operates because just like the vending machine has a specific location for each type of item, a sex-linked gene is located on a specific chromosome - the sex chromosome. In this analogy, the vending machine represents the genome, the columns are the sex chromosomes (X and Y), and the items (drinks or snacks) are the genes; just as you can only get a drink from the drink column, a sex-linked gene can only be found on its designated sex chromosome.
