The diagram of energy loss through a food chain
Real World Example
Imagine trying to fill a colander with water; no matter how much you pour in, a lot of it escapes through the holes, leaving only a small amount at the bottom. This is similar to how energy is transferred and lost in an energy pyramid within a food chain. Just as water escapes through the holes of the colander, energy is lost at each level of the food chain, so by the time you reach the top, only a small fraction of the original energy remains, just like the little water left in the colander.
