The earliest known civilization in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia

Real World Example

Sumer was the first known civilization in southern Mesopotamia, around modern-day Iraq, and it started around 4500 BC. It was important because it introduced many key developments like writing (cuneiform), the wheel, and complex urban societies. Sumerians tackled problems like managing water for agriculture by building irrigation systems, which helped them grow surplus food. Today, Sumer's inventions still impact us; for example, writing systems that originated there have evolved into the alphabets we use now. When you write a text message or read a book, you’re using a system of communication that traces back to innovations from Sumer.
